Abstract

PURPOSE:To absorb thermal expansion and shrinkage of copper molds and to prevent the thermal fatigue of the molds for continuous casting by forming the through-holes for the lock bolts that lock and fix back plates and the copper molds in long holes, thereby corresponding these to the expansion and shrinkage allowances for the mold. CONSTITUTION:When molten steel is flowed into molds 2, 2, 4, 4, made of copper plates, the outermost parts of the molds 2, 2 try to elongate and therefore the bolt through-holes 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7 of back plates 1 are beforehand punched horizontally long by as much as elongation allowances. Therefore, when the amt. of the molten metal fluctuates and decreases, lock bolts 8 and the molds 2 return to the state of the line B-B from the state of the line C-C and the remaining of the strains in the molds 2 in the bolts 8 and the molds 2 is obviated, hence the generation of cracking in the meniscus part of the molds owing to thermal fatigue is obviated. Arrangement is so made that the tightening forces of the molds 2 and the back plates 1 are maintained always at required magnitude by belleville springs 11.
