Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the formation of a softened part by press-welding heat treated rails to each other and acceleratedly cooling the weld zone at once. CONSTITUTION:Rails heat treated by hardening-tempering or slack quenching are joined together by flash butt welding or gas welding. Immediately after the welding a deformable cooling box 2 is applied to the weld zone 10 (rail head), and the pressure of a liq. in the box 2 is regulated. The contact wall 1 of the box 2 is deformed along the external face of the rail, and both the parts are brought into contact with each other. THus, the austenite structure of the weld zone 10 is transformed into a fine pearlite structure to prevent the formation of a softened part.
