Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure coding with high efficiency, by subjecting a code conversion to an estimation error signal with the selected kind of allotment code to turn the error signal into an unequal length code. CONSTITUTION:A code selection deciding circuit 19 decides what kind of the allotment code is suited to the coding with each sample by using the signals with plural numbers of quantizing level obtained previously which are approximated to each other in terms of space to the signal having a quantizing level number to be coded subsequently. Then the code selection signal that selects the allotment code is fed to a switch circuit 20. The circuit 20 selects either one of the terminals (a)-(c) with the code selection signal, and the unequal length code or equal length code which is supplied to the selected terminal is fed to a buffer memory 21. In such way, the coding is carried out with high efficiency.
