Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the lifetime of an enclosed lead-acid storage battery and reduce its discharge capacity for stabilization, by applying pressure to an electricity generating unit as it is dry, so that a glass separator has a prescribed degree of comporession. CONSTITUTION:An electricity generating unit, which is built by piling up paste- type anode plates 1 having PbO2 as active material, paste-type cathode plates 2 having Pd as active material and glass separators 3 made of non-woven fiberglass, is housed in a pressurized state in a battery jar 4. The degree of pressurization of the electricity generating unit is controlled in consideration of the total thickness of the electrode plates 1, 2 and the separators 3 under no pressure and the inside dimensions of the battery jar 4 so that the degree of compression of each separator is 35-150g/cm<3> as it is dry. After the electricity generating unit is housed in the battery jar 4, a predetermined quantity of an acid electrolyte solution is poured in it. A lid 7 fitted with an anode and a cathode terminals 6, 5 connected to the electrode 1, 2 through lead wires is mounted on the battery jar. A battery is thus completed.
