Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a particulate product without problem of tackiness directly from a hydrogel prepared by a W/O type reversed phase suspension polymerization of a material containing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic monomer, etc., by employing a specified surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: In separating a hydrogel prepared by a W/O type reversed phase suspension polymerization of an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer or its alkali metal salt from an organic solvent, use is made of, as a tack eliminator, a nonionic surfactant, HLB≤2.8, pref. 2.5W0.8 (e.g., sorbitan trioleate). Its amount of addition is above 0.05wt%, pref., 0.1W50wt%, based on hydrogel. In some cases, said surfactant is used in combination with a hydrocarbon oil or fat and oil. The use of this surfactant can eliminates fusion of hydrogel particles in the drying step and, therefore, it becomes possible to obtain products economically because of no need for grinding.
