Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtan a medium having excellent dispersibility and dispersing stability and adapted for high density recording by covering the surface of a ferromagnetic powder with silane coupling agent having an epoxy group, and treating it with a compound having one to three adjacent functional groups including reaction activity for the epoxy group and more than 100 of molecular weight. CONSTITUTION:gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Fe-Co, Co-Cr or the like is used for a ferromagnetic powder, and the surface is covered with a silane coupling agent having an epoxy group such as beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyl, trimethoxy silane, or the like. The surface is further treated with a compound which has one to three adjacent functional groups including reaction activity for the epoxy group such as amino group, amide group, carboxyl group, carboxylic acid chloride group, hydroxyl group, isocyanate group or the like and which has more than 300 of molecular weight, thereby forming a coupling layer. In this manner, a medium having low noise level can be produced.
