Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an industrial material, under mild reaction conditions, in high yield, by reacting an epoxide with CO2 in the presence of a relatively stable and easily and industrially available organic tin compound as a main catalyst and an organic base as a cocatalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The organic carbonate is prepared by reacting an epoxide (e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, styrene oxide, etc.) with CO2 using (A) a main catalyst consisting of an orgaic tin compound of formula RnSnXm (R is hydrocarbon group; X is an anionix group which saturates the residual bonds of the tin atom; m and n are 1W3; m+n is 4) together with (B) a cocatalyst consisting of an orgaic base (e.g. aliphatic or aromatic amines, phosphines, etc.). The combined use of the cocatalyst affords a remarkable effect. The main catalyst and the codatalyst exhibit the effect at an amount of as low as 0.1mol% each, based on the epoxide used as a raw material, and the practical upper limit of the amount is 5mol%.
