PURPOSE:To detect accurately the angle change of an outline edge, by obtaining a quadrant code and an intra-quadrant direction code indicating the direction of a unit string from the direction vector of the unit string. CONSTITUTION:A direction code converting circuit 9 converts the coordinate code read out from a coordinate memory 1 to a quadrant code and an intra- quadrant direction code and supplies these codes to a direction memory 2. The direction of a unit string is indicated by the quadrant code and the intra- quadrant direction code, and 360 deg. is divided equally into four in the quadrant code, and one quadrant is divided into (12) in the intra-quadrant direction code. An angle change calculating circuit 10 obtains the angle change of the unit string on a basis of the quadrant code and the intra-quadrant direction code read out from the direction memory 2 and supplies an angle change code to an angle change memory 3.
