Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently manufacture magnetic powder having low hygroscopicity and causing no deterioration in the magnetic characteristics even if allwed to stand at high humidity by reducing and nitriding iron (oxide) with a compound contg. nitrogen and by pulverizing it. CONSTITUTION:Iron (oxide) such as reduced iron powder, electrolytic iron powder or iron oxide is reduced and nitrided at 400-900 deg.C in an atmosphere of a compound contg. nitrogen such as NH3, and it is optionally denitrified. The resulting Fe4N, etc. with high magnetic flux density are pulverized and classified to obtain Fe4N-base magnetic powder for an electrophotographic toner contg. Fe2N2 and Fe3N besides the Fe4N and having <=10mum average grain size and 0.3-15wt% N content. This magnetic powder has about 60-140emu/g magnetic flux density in about 1,000Oe magnetic field, and the magnetic characteristics are hardly deteriorated even if the powder is allowed to stand at 60 deg.C and 90% RH for 2 weeks.
