Abstract

PURPOSE: Aqueous acrylamide is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst, granulated, brought into contact with caustic alkali, partially hydrolyzed under specific conditions keeping water content at a certain level, then dried to produce the titled polymer free from water-insoluble components, thus being used as a flocculant.
CONSTITUTION: The polymerization of aqueous acrylamide of 15W45wt% concentration is polymerized by adding 2,2-azobis(2-aminopropane)hydrochloride and sodium bisulfite as catalysts to prepare a gel polymer of 85W55wt% water content. The resultant polymer is made into granules by means of a meat-milling type extrusion granulator and the granulated polymer is partially hydrolyzed by bringing them into contact with aqueous caustic alkali, e.g., spraying at 50W150°C under conditions where the water content of the granulated polymer is not lowered substantially, until the hydrolysis rate reaches more than 60%. Then, the resultant granules are dried.
