Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a carbonic acid ester, easily, by the ester exchange of an alkyl carbonate with an aromatic hydroxyl compound using a catalyst containing a non-corrosive and inexpensive lead compound or a phosphine and a chelating agent.
CONSTITUTION: An aryl carbonate and/or alkyl aryl carbonate (e.g. methyl phenyl carbonate) is prepared by the ester-exchange of an alkyl carbonate (e.g. dimethyl carbonate (with an aromatic hydroxyl compound (e.g. phenol) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a lead compound such as Pb(OAc)2, Pb(OAc)4, Pb(OH)2, PbCl2, PbO, PbCO3, etc. (Ac is acetyl). The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of one or more additives selected from phosphines of formula R1R2R3P (R1WR3 are alkyl or aryl), chelating agents, and alkali halides.
