Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain picture element information which corresponds to a picture element having a mean gradation by encoding and decoding pieces of picture element information by dividing a halftone signal into blocks of picture elements, and representing the gradation of each block by plural kinds of gradation information and picture element information showing resolution. CONSTITUTION:An encoder consists of a circuit 1 which separates gradation information and picture element information, a binary signal encoder 2, a gradation information encoder 3, a multiplexer part 4, etc., and the circuit 1 divides a halftone fascimile signal into blocks having sides each consisting of N pieces of picture elements. A picture- element information signal 6 separated by the circuit 1 is applied to the encoder 2, and a gradation information signal 7 is applied to and encoded by the encoder 3 to output encoded gradation data 9. The data 9 and picture-element information encoded data 8 from the encoder 2 are applied to the multiplexer part 4, and the data 8 and 9 are switched alternately by a flag for switching to output halftone encoded data 10. A decoder having constitution reverse of that of the decoder decodes the data 10 to find picture element information which corresponds to a picture element having a mean gradation.
