Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the weight of a connecting rod, by bending a single steel plate to manufacture the connecting rod. CONSTITUTION:Both the side edges of a slender steel plate are bent toward one side so that ribs 7 and a flat part 8 are provided. A loop 4, which corresponds to a piston pin 3, is made on a bent part of the steel plate. The ends of the steel plate are opened divergently. A half 6A of a loop 6, which corresponds to a crank pin 5, and flanges 9 are provided. The flanges 9 extend almost in the diametral direction of the crank pin 5. Another steel plate is pressed to manufacture a bearing cap 2 as well as a connecting rod body 1. The flat part 8A of the latter pressed steel plate includes the other half 6B of the loop 6 for the crank pin 5 and flanges 9A extending from the half loop 6B in the diametral direction of the loop.
