Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a base material for an optical fiber having a uniform outside diameter and a uniform boundary line between core and clad by inclining the rotating shaft of a starting member for depositing and melting fine glass particles to the blowoff direction of a flow of fine glass particles. CONSTITUTION:Fine glass particles of SiO2 contg. a solubilized dopant material or crystal powder 41 is fed to a torch 42, blown off as a flow 43 of fine glass particles in the direction of an arrow 44, deposited on the tip of a rotating and moving starting member 47, and melted to form a round rodlike transparent doped silica glass body 46. At this time, the angle between the rotating shaft 48 of the member 47 and the blowoff direction 44 of the flow 43 is set to 5- 90 deg.. Thus, the central melting temp. and the peripheral melting temp. of the glass body growing face 49 are made almost equal to each other, and the dimensional accuracy of the glass body 46 in the outside diameter is improved.
