Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the biodegradability of cellulose, by ozonizing a cellulosic material, mixing the ozonized cellulosic material with an aqueous solution of an alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal, and heating the mixture at about 100°C.
CONSTITUTION: The moisture content of a raw cellulosic material is increased to 10% or more in a mixing tank 1 with water supplied from a water tank 3 by an atomizer 2, and brought into contact with ozone supplied from an ozonizer 5 in an ozone treating tank 4 by the gas-solid contacting method. The treated cellulosic material is then discharged from a discharge feeder 6 at the bottom of the tank 4. A 0.05W0.8wt% aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. NaOH solution, in an amount of 0.5W 20 times that of the cellulosic material is fed from an alkali storage tank 7 and sprayed on the cellulosic material in a mixing heating tank 8 by the atomizer 2, and the sprayed cellulosic material is then heated at about 100°C.
