Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the energy consumption of a glass melting process, and to promote the defoaming of molten glass, by passing induction current directly through the molten glass, thereby melting the glass continuously, little by little. CONSTITUTION:An electrical insulating tube 2 resistant to high temperature, e.g. a quartz tube, is attached to the top of the small platinum crucible 1 having a small hole 7 at the bottom, and filled with a glass material. The crucible 1 is heated to melt the glass material 3 by passing high-frequency electrical current through the coil 4 surrounding the platinum crucible 1, and the depth of the molten glass layer is increased by passing the high-frequency electrical current directly to the molten glass. The molten glass 6 is stirred by the interaction of the induction current and the high-frequency magnetic field, and is extruded through the small hole 7 at the bottom of the platinum crucible 1.
