Abstract

PURPOSE: A gas containing sulfur dioxide is reduced with methanol in the presence of CoO-MoO2-Al2O3 and subjected to the Claus reaction to recover sulfur from sulfur dioxide in high conversion.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing high-concentration sulfur dioxide such as an eliminated gas from dry desulfurizer is sent through pipe 1 and mixed with methanol 2, then introduced into the reactor 3 filled with a catalyst of CoO-MoO2- supporting Al2O3 where the reaction proceeds at about 250°C or higher temperature and when the temperature exceeds about 350°C more than 95% of methanol fed is utilized ror the reaction. The reaction of formula IV proceeds almost quantitatively and 3mol of sulfur dioxide is reduced with 2mol of methanol sufficiently. But, reactions of formulaIthrough III (take place simultaneously) where both are consumed at a 1:1 molar ratio and sulfur dioxide remains unreacted in an amount corresponding to these reactions. This unreacted sulfur dioxide is subjected to the Claus reaction of formula V in the catalyst-filled reactor 5 at a temperature lower than that in the former reaction. Finally S is condensed in condenser 7 for separation.
