PURPOSE:To detect the position of a vehicle even when it is still without performing complicate processing, by emitting an ultrasonic wave to a target on a track, and detecting the presence of its reflected wave or it propagation time. CONSTITUTION:A driving magnetic pole 2 on a vehicle is energized by a superconductive coil, and a ground driving coil 6 is controlled by a position detection signal and then energized by a three-phase power source. On the flank of a running vehicle 1 floating magnetically, ultrasonic-wave transmitter and receivers 3 and 4 are arranged opposite a reflecting plate 5 arranged on a flank over a track. When a position discriminator 15 opens a gate 8, the output of an oscillator 7 is passed through the gate 8 and an amplifier 9 to radiate an ultrasonic wave from an ultrasonic wave receiver and transmitter 10 to the reflecting plate 5. The reflected ultrasonic wave is received by an ultrasonic-wave receiver 11 and then sent to the position discriminator 15 through an amplifier 12 and a waveform shaping circuit 13, thereby discriminating the presence of the reflecting plate 5. For other transmitter and receivers, the same operation is carried out to detect the position of the vehicle.
