Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent generation of shot noise for an optical pulse receiver, by closing a gate circuit in case the optical input pulse is interrupted or drops abnormally. CONSTITUTION:The pulse supplied to a receiver via an optical transmission line is converted into an electric signal through an APD1 and then amplified by an amplifier 2 to be applied to a gate circuit 8 through a discriminating/reproducing circuit 7. A part of the output of the amplifier 2 receives a detection of its peak value through a peak detector 3 and is applied to an APD via a converter 4 to perform an AGC. At the same time, another part of the output of the amplifier 2 is applied to a level detector 6 through a band pass filter 5 that transmits the frequency component of a carrier pulse. When the output of the filter 5 is higher than a certain level, the circuit 8 is opened to make the output of the circuit 7 pass through a demodulator 9. The gate circuit 8 is closed in case the pulse is interrupted or drops abnormally. Thus the occurrence of the shot noise can be prevented.
