PURPOSE:To enhance the dimensional stability of a plate for a lead battery by punching off the central part of a sheet made of a lead alloy so as to form lug parts or the like, subjecting parts on both sides of the lug parts or the like to expanding work before a paste is packed into the expanded sheet. CONSTITUTION:The central part of a long sheet 1' made of a lead alloy is punched off so that holes 6 are formed at given intervals (f). Next, the sheet 1' is supplied to an expanding device 3, mesh parts 9 are formed on both sides of lug parts 7 and lateral bones (d) supporting the lug parts, which remain around the holes 6, and the sheet 1' is subjected to expanding work continuously. Then, the mesh parts 9 of the sheet 1' are made to have a given thickness by means of a pressing device 16. After that, the sheet 1' is passed through a paste packing device 8, a cutting device 10 and a drying furnace 11, thereby making plates for a lead battery continuously.
