Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve selective ON-OFF control over the passing of light at optional positions in some direction, by superposing electrooptical effect elements and polarizing plates successively, and driving those elements in parallel by a common power source. CONSTITUTION:Electrooptical effect elements M1-M3 superposed upon polarizing plates P1-P4 have electrodes EA1-EA3, and EB1-EB3 varying in width in the prescribed direction Y of light to vary the ratio of the widths in the traveling direction X of the light, and are connected to a common power source V in parallel. When the voltage of the power source is zero, the light is transmitted over the entire region, but when the voltage is raised, the light is cut off over the entire region up to some voltage VL; when the voltage reaches the VL, only a part having maximum electrode width transmits the light, and when the voltage is further raised, the position of the transmission of the light moves from a part having wide electrode width to a part having narrow width.
