Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the light transmission loss of an optical fiber due to scattering and to make the dimensions of the fiber uniform in the peripheral and longitudinal directions by heating the surface of an intermediate base material for an optical fiber, successively depositing glass or glass particles by flame oxidation, and melt-spinning the glass or the glass particles. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate base material 3 made of glass for an optical fiber is attached to a glass lathe and rotated in the direction of an arrow 5. A heating source 1 and a burner 2 are moved in the direction of an arrow 6. When a product 4 is deposited on the glass core 3, the core 3 is heated with the source 2, and simultaneously the surface is cleaned with the flame. The product 4 is successively deposited with the burner 2, so fine glass particles or a glass product with high bulk density is deposited. The glass particles or the glass product is melt-spun.
