Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a display cell withstand repeated coloring and decoloring independently of the outside humidity by sealing the cell with a moisture noncuring type resin while holding a proper quantity of water in the electrochromic material. CONSTITUTION:On a substrate 1 an electrode layer 2, an electrolytically oxidizable thin film 3, an insulating thin film 4 of a protonic conductor, an electrolytically reducible thin film 5 of WO3, MoO3 or the like, and an opposite electrode 6 are laminated in order. After confirming that 10-30vol.% water is contained in the electrochromic thin films, the whole of the laminated 5 layers is sealed by coating with a moisture noncuring type resin such as epoxy resin, an ultraviolet curing type resin or ''Parlylene ''. By this metod a whole solid type electrochromic display cell usable in a vacuum or in water and having superior mechanical and chemical durability and a long life is obtd. The coloring density of the cell is independent of the outside humidity.
