Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible easy and precise slantwise grinding of the end of an optical fiber in any direction and at any angle by touching the end of the fiber to the surface of a grindstone in a manner that the center line of the fiber is out of center with the center axis of rotation of the grindstone to grind the end face containing the exposed portion of the fiber. CONSTITUTION:A grindstone 11 has a spherical grinding surface 12. With the center line (the center line of an optical fiber 2) O1 - O1 of a rod whith an optical fiber in its center being positioned out of center by delta with the centeraxis of rotation O2 - O2 of a grindstone 11, the end face 13 is touched to the grinding surface 12 of the grindstone 11. By rotating the grindstone 11 around the center axis of rotation O2 - O2, the portion of the end face 13 containing the optical fiber 2 can be ground to a shpherical surface 14. The end configuration of the optical fiber 2 is roughly flat and is at a certain angle to the end face of the rod and this angle can be adjusted by varying the amount of eccentricity delta.
