Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a large-sized ingot of good quality in a short time efficiently without causing formation of cavities and inclusion of dross by sliding a mold and cooling molten metal from downward while casting the same.
CONSTITUTION: A sliding mold 1 is first located upward, and the lower part of an open surface 2 is held covered by a jacketed mold 6. Molten metal 12 is successively charged from a melting furnace 9 into the space formed by these two molds 1, 6, and cooling water is supplied to the mold 6. In accordance with the charging of the molten metal 12, the molten metal surface ascends gradually, and before the molten metal spills to the outer side of the open surface 2 of the mold 1, a driving device 3 operates to move the sliding mold 1 downward. The molten metal 12 is continuously charged into the mold 1 and is cooled from the lower part. When the mold completely detaches from the contact with the mold 6, and arrives at the bottom moving end, the mold 1 positions horizontally. At this time, the molten metal 12 in the mold 1 solidifies completely, and a large-sized ingot 13 of a prescribed size is obtained.
