Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure the partial pressure of the oxygen in the gas to be tested from low concentration region to high concentration region continuously and highly accurately by providing two electrode layers of different thicknesses which are provided on both sides of an oxygen ion transmitting sintered body. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 2 comprising a thin metal layer is formed on one side of a disk shaped, solid state electrolyte sintered body 1. An electrode 3 whose thickness is thicker than that of the electrode 2 is formed on the other surface. Lead wires 4 and 5 are connected to the electrode layrs 2 and 3. The entire surface of the element is coated by a porous coating layer 6. Thus the oxygen sensor element is constituted. When a specified current is flowed to the electrode currents 2 and 3 from a power source 7 at the time of measurement, the amount of inflow of the oxygen is limited since the metal layer forming the electrode 3 is thick. When a constant voltage is applied, a threshold current is generated across the electrodes 2 and 3. By measuring the concentration of the oxygen by said threshold current value, the oxygen concentration characterized by the small dispersion in the values due to the applied voltage can be detected highly accurately.
