Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively remove a return formed on the inner surface of a cylinder, by chemically treating a cylinder block whose inner surface is ground, and subjecting the culinder block to ultrasonic vibration.
CONSTITUTION: A cast iron-made cylinder block or liner whose inner surface is ground is dipped in an aqueous nitric acid solution to which an amine-type corrosion inhibitor is added. The amine-type corrosion inhibitor is preferably hexamethylene tetramine, for instance. The inner surface of the cylinder is uniformly etched by this treatment, and a return formed by the grinding work is weakened and embrittled. When ultrasonic vibration is applied to the treated inner surface, the return, weakened by the etching liquid, at the inner surface of the cast iron-made cylinder is fatigued, broken down and separated from the inner surface. At the same time, grind powder adherent to the inner surface is also removed.
