Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the diffusivity of N into a steel during soft-nitriding, to raise surface hardness, to deepen a hardened layer and to offer high toughness, by letting the steel, to be soft-nitrided, contain specified amounts of C, Si, Mn, Cr, Al and Nb.
CONSTITUTION: A steel to be soft-nitrided has the composition of, by wt%, 0.03W0.25 C, 0.1W1 Si, Mn<1.5, 0.1W2.5 Cr, Al<0.08, 0.25W2.5 Nb and the balance being Fe and inevitable impurities. In this case, effective Nb, i.e. Nb%- C%×7.74 is controlled at 0.01W0.5. The steel may further contain Mo<0.3, or one or more of S<0.3, Pb<0.35, Bi<0.1, Te<0.1, Se<0.1 and Ce<0.2.
