Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of machining of a shaft and reduce the number of the steps of the machining, by adjusting the mounting of anti-whirl units to prescribed positions and then starting the machining as the shaft is kept slightly curved. CONSTITUTION:Anti-whirl units 44, 46 are previously positioned on the basis of a master whose radius is equal to that of ground shaft portions 34, 36. For that reason, when a cam shaft 10 to be machined is set, the centers A of the shaft portions 34, 36 are not located on a desired axis and the shaft portions are lightly pushed by contact members 40, 42 so that the cam shaft is slightly curved. The machining is then started by a grindstone 52. When the shaft portions 34, 36 are machined to a reference dimension, their centers are shifted to positions B on the axis and the curvature of the cam shaft 10 is eliminated and it is accurately supported around the axis by the shaft portions 34, 36 and the contact members 40, 42. Cams 20, 22,... are then machined sequentially.
