PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive position detector by detecting signals from a pair of detectors and their phase difference and switching the method of pulse generation in a count pulse generator. CONSTITUTION:Position detectors DA and DB generate pulses with phase difference each other when an object to be detected is moved. A count pulse generator 4 receives the outputs of both detectors and sent a forward (UP) or backward (DOWN) count pulse to a counter 5. When the detector DB is off-failure, for example, a detecting circuit 1 outputs a signal AY to indicate the rising of a signal A to the rising of a signal B. An abnormal circuit 2 receives signals AY and A and sends a B failure detecting signal to an abnormal circuit 3 to output a signal BZ to a pulse generator 4. After receiving signals BZ and A, the pulse generator 4 sends a count pulse for UP or DOWN to the counter 5. Thus, since a pair of detectors complete a series of operation, the inexpensive position detectors can be obtained.
