Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 3-bromo-4-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) benzaldehyde of fomula I.
USE: A synthetic intermediate for medicines, capable of synthesizing a propanolamine having β-blocking action by reacting the compound of formula I with an amine and also a substituted benzylidenehydrazinophthalazine having the β-blocking action and vasodilator action at the same time by reacting the amine with a hydrazone obtained by reacting the compound of formula I with hydrazine.
PROCESS: A 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde of formula II is reacted with an epihalohydrin of formula III (X is halogen) to give the compound of formula I. The reaction is completed in the presence of an aqueous solvent, e.g. H2O or methanol, at room temperature for 1W24hr. Preferably, the compound of formula III is used in a molar amount of 2W10 times that of the compound of formula II, and the amount of an acid binder, e.g. NaOH or KOH, is used in an equivalent amount of about 1W1.5 times that of the compound of formula II.
