Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently recover carbonaceous matter and to efficiently remove ash from coal, by agitating a coal-water slurry with an injected oil, floating up the carbonaceous matter of the coal adsorbed on the oil, and depositing and separating the ash.
CONSTITUTION: Raw material 6 consisting of an aq. slurry of a pulverized coal and oil 7 are supplied into cylindrical mixing vessel 5 with agitator 8 and mixed under agitation. The supplied oil 7 is turned into oil droplet 3 by the action of surface tension and floats up with only a carbonaceous matter in suspended coal particle 4 being adsorbed on its surface, to form froth layer 1 consisting of a mixt. of the carbonaceous matter and oil in the top portion of the mixing vessel 5. A particle rich in the ash can be withdrawn via ash outlet conduit 9 out of the system because it falls and remains on the bottom of the mxing vessel 5. The oil 7 is pref. supplied along the inner wall of the mixing vessel 5, and it is pref. to carry out the agitation to an extent of Reynolds number causing no turbulent flow.
