Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an EL fluorescent substance with high luminance and prolonged life, by calcining zinc sulfide mixed with specified amounts of copper acetate and ammonium bromide in an atmosphere contg. hydrogen sufdide.
CONSTITUTION: An EL fluorescent substance consisting of zinc sulfide, 0.1W 0.5mol% copper and 0.05W0.5mol% bromine, each based on zinc sulfide is prepd. by calcining a mixt. consisting of zinc sulfide, 0.15W1.5mol% copper acetate and 0.15W24mol% ammonium bromide, each based on zinc sulfide, in an atmosphere contg. hydrogen sulfide. An excess amt. of copper acetate is used because it partially enters a crystal and the rest sticks on the surface of the crystal and is then washed off. A relatively large amt. of ammonium bromide is used as a flux because fromine easily sublimes and more difficultly enters the fluorescent substance than copper. Calcination is carried out in an atmosphere contg. hydrogen sulfide to prevent deterioration of the crystallizability.
