Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress the formation of secondary scale and to decrease the watt loss and heat loss of steel materials by using gases of specific oxygen partial pressures as gaseous atmospheres for the steel materials under rolling. CONSTITUTION:Covers 4 which cover a steel material 3 are installed between the final roughing mill 1 and the 1st stage 2 of finishing mills, and gas of <=0.10 oxygen partial pressure is fed from a gas source 10 into the covers 4 through a blast duct 5 mounted to a part of said covers. Ducts 8, 9 wiich suck the blown- out gas and release the same to the outside of buildings are installed to the side faces 6, 7 of the covers. The atmosphere of the steel material in the covers 4 is the gas of <=0.10 oxygen partial pressure fed therein, whereby the formation of secondary scale is prevented.
