Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the reduction in size, the driving on lower voltage and the integration with other optical circuit elements possible by changing the molecular orientation of a liquid crystal layer partially thereby controlling the confinement effect of the light propagating in the optical waveguide film. When voltage is applied between the electrodes 4a, 4b and the electrode 2, the light emits in the direction of the 9 shown in the figure in the same manner, thus switching of the light is made possible.
