Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the reduction in size, the driving on lower voltage and the integration with other optical circuit elements possible by changing the molecular orientation of a liquid crystal layer partially thereby controlling the confinement effect of the light propagating in the optical waveguide film. CONSTITUTION:If beltlike electrodes 4a, 4b, 4c of a Y shape are provided to a substrate 5, and voltage is applied between 4a, 4b out of said electrodes and a transparent electrode 2, only those in the lower parts of the 4a, 4b out of liquid crystal molecules 6 orient perpendicularly to the wall surface, and the equivalent refractive index of the parts corresponding to th lower parts of the 4a, 4b out of an optical waveguide film 1 is increased by this phenomenon and therefore the light which has the polarization direction of 7b and is made incident from the direction of the 7 shown in the figure is confined in the optical waveguide film parts in the lower part of the 4a, 4b, and emits in the direction of 2. When voltage is applied between the electrodes 4a, 4b and the electrode 2, the light emits in the direction of the 9 shown in the figure in the same manner, thus switching of the light is made possible.
