Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain easily filtrable synthetic resin particles having functional groups on their surfaces at higher densities, by suspension-copolymerizing a hydrophobic monomer having a plurality of unsaturated groups with a hydrophilic monomer having functional groups.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrophilic polymerization initiator is dissolved in a hydrophobic monomer having at least two unsaturated groups (Ma). The resulting solution is added to a medium, e.g., water, and heated with agitation. Thereby, Ma polymerizes and gels into spherical particles while it is maintained in the form of sphere dispersed in water. If is preferred that this polymerization reaction is stopped at the stage at which the spherical gel particles contain at least 5wt% unreacted Ma monomer (prepolymer gel particle). Next, a hydrophobic monomer containing functional groups (Mb) is added to an aqueous suspension of said prepolymer gel particles and the mixture is copolymerized under agitation. It is preferred that the amount of unreacted monomer remaining in the prepolymer gel particles is not higher than 95%. This makes it possible to obtain a particulate polymer having a uniform and desired particle size.
