PURPOSE:To detect a slit setting error, and to prevent a paper feed error, by monitoring a character pattern signal, detecting the width of a high reflection part on the surface of a slip, and detecting a tip of the slip and a direction discriminating mark which has been printed on the tip part, in accordance with a variation of said width. CONSTITUTION:A slip 2 which has been set to a hopper part 1 is taken out by one sheet each by a paper feed roller 3, and is fed into a base 5 of a scanning part by carrying rollers 4a, 4b. A light beam from a light source 7 of this scanning part is irradiated onto the slip 2, a reflected ray from the slip 2 is converted to an electric signal by a photoelectric conversion part 8, and a character pattern by an electric signal is generated by the conversion part 8. This character pattern is supplied to both a character recognition part 9 and a paper feed error primary means 10. Subsequently, width of a high reflection part on the surface of the slip 2 is detected by a white bit detecting circuit 11, a direction discriminating mark which has been printed by a counting value comparing circuit 12 is detected by a variation of said width, and when the discriminating mark is not detected after detecting a tip of the slip 2, and error signal is outputted from an error detecting circuit 13.
