Abstract
PURPOSE:To decide whether a flaw has resulted from a weld part flaw or poor weld conditon, by a method wherein an ultrasonic flaw detection is performed by employing a flaw-detecting inclined probe and a thickness-measuring probe. CONSTITUTION:An electric welded steel tube 1 is continuously fed with the weld bead directed upward. An inclined probe of an ultrasonic flaw detector 11 is at- tached to a holding mechanism 13 and made to follow a weld line through an automatic or mannual operation. A thickness-measuring probe 6 of an ultrasonic thickness-measuring apparatus 10 is attached to a holding mechanism 14 and rocked con- stantly in order to measure the thickness of the vicinity of the weld bead. The flaw detection results obtained by the inclined probe includes flows resulting from the inclusion existing in the weld part, the inclusion existing in the body material and the poor configuration of the weld bead. The poor configuration of the weld bead detected by the thickness-measuring probe is detected as an abnormality in the thickness ment. If the result obtained by the inclined probe is judged on combining it with the weld bead poorness detecting signal, it is possible to decide whether the flaw detected by means of the inclined flaw detection has resulted from a weld part flow or poor bead configuration.
