Abstract

PURPOSE: A specific high-volatility, non or little bituminous coal is modified to coal suitable for making metallurgy coke by heating it in an specific oxygen atmosphere at specified temperature, followed by second heating under different conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A high-volatility, non or little bituminous coal with a crucible swelling number (CSN) exceeding 1 is subjected to the primary heating under less than 1.5% oxygen concentration so that CSN is made to less than 1. Then, the secondary heating is conducted under less than 1.5% oxygen concentration at 450-550°C to make the bulk density more than 580kg/m3. Thus, the high-volatility, non or little bituminous coal with CSN of over 1, showing almost no fluidity, is modified to a coal suitable for making metallurgy coke.
