PURPOSE:To make transmission in high speed through the hope of a subscriber and to improve the communication of traffic by utilizing an idle channel, by switching a communication speed at terminal, any time when requests come from terminals or exchangers. CONSTITUTION:To a terminal 17 having communication function at a plurality of speeds, a line terminator 19 is connected via a clock signal line 6 and an information line 7, and a time division exchanger 4 is connected to the terminator 19 via a time division multiplex subscriber line 20 to constitute a speed selecting communication system. The terminator 19 is provided with a multiplexer 23 to control data transmission between the information line 17 and the multiplex subscriber line 20. A clock supply circuit 21 and a clock selection circuit 22 are connected to the multiplexer 23, and the circuit 22 is connected to the clock line 6. According to the request from the terminal 17 of the exchanger 4, the communication speed is switched at any time according to the communication speed at the terminal 17, the data transmission is made to high speed through the desire of subscribers, allowing to use vacant channels.
