Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a high-contrast negative image suitable for a halftone image, by processing a photographic material containing a hydrazine compound and a mercapto compound with an activator. CONSTITUTION:A surface latent image type silver halide photographic material containing a developing agent; a hydrazone compound represented by the general formula (I) in which R<1> is optionally substituted aryl or alkyl, and R<2> is H or optionally substituted aryl or alkyl; and a mercapto compound represented by the formula (II) in which R<1>, R<2> are each H or an aliphatic group and they may link to each other and form a ring, R<3> is a divalent aliphatic group, X is a simple bond or a divalent heterocyclic ring containing N, O, or S, and M is a cation is exposed and processed in an aqueous activator solution with a pH kept >=11.5.
