Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a cast ingot of fine crystal grains by loading a cooling element into molten aluminum to form a solidified layer, electromagnetically stirring this to fine solidified pieces and stripping these. CONSTITUTION:Molten aluminum M is supplied from a spout 3 through a hot top 4 into a mold 1, and cooling water is supplied through a pipe 2 to cool the molten metal M, thence a bottom plate 6 is lowered, whereby a cast ingot 5 is formed continuously. A cooling element 7 is loaded into the molten metal M in the hot top 4 and the mold 1 and a refrigerant is passed therethrough via a supply pipe 9 and a discharge pipe 10, whereby crystals 12 are formed on the surface of the element 7. On the other hand an electromagnetic coil 11 is disposed in the hot top 4, and the crystals 12 formed on the surface of the element 7 are stripped by the electromagnetic effect thereof, and these are allowed to fall onto the solidification interface of the ingot 5. Then fallen crystals 12 form crytal nuclei, thereby finig the structure of the ingot 5.
