Abstract

PURPOSE:To securely hold a catalyst carrier for a long period, by making a buffer of stainless steel whose inner part is an austenite layer and whose outer part is a ferrite layer and by providing the buffer in the exhaust line of an engine. CONSTITUTION:To elastically hold a monolithic catalyst 4 in a casing 1, a wave- shaped net or sheet of stainless steel is provided. The inner part 7a of the stainless steel net or sheet is a thick austenite layer. The outer layer 7b of the net or sheet is a thin ferrite layer. Since the thermal expansion coefficient and thickness of the inner layer 7a are higher than those of the outer layer 7b, the inner layer expands beyond the elastic limit of the outer layer at high temperature so that the net or sheet of stainless steel remains expanded from the initial size when it is cooled. For that reason, the carrier for the catalyst 4 is securely held even if the temperature is low.
