Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a polarizing film with superior optical and environmental characteristics by allowing iodine to be absorbed in a polyvinyl alcohol film up to the central layer part, removing iodine from surface layers, and allowing a dichromatic dye to be absorbed in the layers. CONSTITUTION:By immersing a polyvinyl alcohol film stretched uniaxially by 3-5 times in an aqueous KI soln. of iodine, iodine is allowed to be absorbed in the film up to the central layer part to form an H film, and the film is immersed in an aqueous sodium thiosulfate soln. to remove iodine from surface layers each having a thickness corresponding to 1/6-1/3 of the total thickness of the film. By immersing this film in an aqueous soln. of a dichromatic dye selected from azo, anthraquinone, indigo and phthalocyanine reactive dyes, the dye is allowed to be absorbed in the surface layers to obtain a polyvinyl alcohol film 31 having an iodine absorbed H film layer 32 at the central layer part and dichromatic dye absorbed L film layers 33 at both the surface layers. Thus, a polarizing film with a high degree of polarization and superior moisture resistance is obtd.
