Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit simultaneous detection of longitudinal cracking flaws and transverse cracking flaws simultaneously by setting the directions and angles of irradiation of irradiating light to the surface of a steel material at prescribed values. CONSTITUTION:Illuminators 5, 5 irradiate light which is nearly belt-like parallel light to an area on the surface of a slab S corresponding to the visual field of a solid state image sensing element 14 of an image pickup device 6. The irradiation direction alpha and irradiation angle beta of the irraidating rays are set at the values calculated in accordance with the equations on the basis of an optimum irradiation angle theta1 for detection of longitudinal cracking flaws and an optimum irradiation angle theta2 for detection of transverse cracking flaws. The luminance patterns reflected from the slab S obtained from the device 6 are displayed in a monitor television 22 via an image converter 21, and are inputted to a longitudinal cracking flaw detector 23 and a transverse cracking flaw detector 24.
