Abstract

PURPOSE: Polyester fibers, prepared by blending polyethylene terephthalate with a copolyester of specific structure, having improved fiber making properties, strength and Young's modulus and reduced heat shrinkage.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 99.5W70pts.wt. polyethylene terephthalate is mixed with (B) 0.5W30pts.wt. polyester having units expressed by formulaI(R is H, CH3 or C2H5) and formulas II and III at a molar ratio of the units expressed by formulasI, II and III satisfying the formulaI≈(II+III) and II/III=(10/90)W(60/40) and a reduced viscosity ηsp/C of 0.1W0.6, and then melt spun. Alternatively, the components (A) and (B) are melt spun while being mixed, and the resultant fiber are then drawn to give the aimed fibers in which the component (B) is at least partially dispersed as a nonuniform phase and the nonuniform phase is present in such a form as to make the dispersion length in the long direction of the fibers larger than that in the direction perpendicular to the long direction of the fibers.
