Abstract

PURPOSE:To supplement tool shortages in an automatic tool changer by automatically fixing a tool on a work pallet to a main shaft, in a machine tool having an automatic work pallet changer (APC) and an automatic tool changer (ATC). CONSTITUTION:A plural number of tools 57 are removably mounted on a work pallet 52 in a machine tool such as machining center which has an ATC2 and APC4. when changing tools which cannot be housed in an ATC, an empty tool holding mechanism 58 on the pallet is opposed to a main shaft 13, and then the main shaft is advanced along Z axis and lowered along Y axis to insert a tool 13 into the tool holding mechanism and afterwards the main shaft is retreated along the Z axis to be drawn out. After moving the pallet and opposing to the main shaft a tool which is to be computed and exchanged, the foregoing steps are reversely followed to mount a new tool on the main shaft.
