Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an emulsifying agent for emulsion polymn., in which water resistance is improved and which is suitble for use in the production of an emulsion suitable for film formation, containing magnesium (long-chain alkyl)benzenesulfonate as an essential component.
CONSTITUTION: The desired emulsifying agent for emulsion polymn. is obtd. by incorporating magnesium (long-chain alkyl)benzenesulfonate having a 10W15C alkyl group as an essential component into said agent. The emulsion polymn. of a vinyl monomer (e.g. methyl acrylate or vinyl chloride) is carried out by using one pt.wt. magnesium (long-chain alkyl)benzenesulfonate together with 0.1W50pts.wt. nonionic surfactant (e.g. a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether). During emulsion polymn., coarse particle is not formed and the viscosity increase of the emulsion is low. The resulting emulsion gives a film having excellent water resistance.
