PURPOSE:To shorten the restarting time of a high pressure electric-discharge lamp by installing a starting auxiliary body outside an emission tube, installing an auxiliary electrode near a main electrode installed within the emission tube, and reducing starting voltage under a high mercury vapor pressure. CONSTITUTION:A starting auxiliary body 16, which consists of a metal body 17 and an insulator 18, is placed outside an emission tube 1. An auxiliary electrode 19 is placed near a main electrode 3 installed within the emission tube 1. When voltage supplied from a ballast is fed through a base 11 and leads 13, 14 and 15 as well as through the base 11, a lead 12, a supporting frame 5, the metal body 17, a supporting frame 4 and leads 9 and 10 and is applied across main electrodes 2 and 3, voltage is applied also across the main electrode 3 and the auxiliary electrode 19 through a resistance 21, and auxiliary electric discharge is developed across the electrodes 3 and 19. At the same time, pulse voltage supplied from the ballast is applied across the electrodes 2 and 3 as well as across the electrode 3 and the starting auxiliary body 16 having the same electric potential as the electrode 2, and discharge is easily initiated across them. Then, stable lighting is achieved.
