Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a focal plane shutter which can expose the entire surface of a film to the light at one time, by using a liqud crystal element in place of a mechanical opening/closing member of a camera shutter. CONSTITUTION:An ordinary mobile mirror 2 (also serving as a light shielding matter) is provided at the rear side of a lens 1 of a camera, and the opening and closing liquid crystal elements 4 and 5 are piled on each other at the front side of a film 3. These elements 4 and 5 are actuated by the voltage applied from an electric circuit for operation of liquid crystal element. The liquid crystal element is a negative type like a phase shift guest-host type, etc. with a high contrast. When photographing, the mirror 2 is first raised up with the voltage applied to the element 5 to have the light transmitting state. Then the voltage is applied to the element 4 to start the exposure, and the exposure is over when the application of voltage is discontinued to the element 5.
